Discover how L’Odyssée Sonore brings a 2000-year-old theatre to life with breathtaking projection mapping powered by WATCHOUT.
In the heart of Provence, a 2,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site has become the stage for one of Europe’s most ambitious immersive productions. Since May 2023, L’Odyssée Sonore has transformed the Théâtre Antique d’Orange (Roman Theatre of Orange) into a 360° universe of sound and monumental imagery. Behind the scenes, Videmus provided seamless show control and the complete media server infrastructure, powered by Dataton WATCHOUT.
In May 2023, the Roman Theatre of Orange unveiled a bold new chapter in its history. The immersive production L’Odyssée Sonore invites audiences on a 45-minute journey through mythological landscapes, accompanied by a sweeping panorama of gods, deities, and fantastical visions projected across 5,000 square meters of stone.
Videmus, the Dataton premium partner in France, delivered the media server infrastructure and show control that would turn artistic ambition into reality.
Using Dataton WATCHOUT, the team mapped both flat and complex architectural surfaces, seamlessly blending 2D transformations on the stage and orchestra with 3D mapping of the massive stands. WATCHOUT runs on seven Pro X4 servers, each equipped with 4TB of storage and connected by a 10 Gb/s network. These are teamed with 25 Barco G100 projectors to deliver the sheer scale required for the projection canvas.
“Working with WATCHOUT on a project this size is the best way to always have an answer to the technical challenges that pop up during a project," says Benoit Dauvergne, Videmus. "Flexible, powerful and accessible, WATCHOUT is great for venues that host a variety of projects or shows and need a reliable solution.”
Videmus deployed its Zendeo show-control platform, giving operators an ergonomic interface for everything from power sequencing to temperature monitoring and headset management. The result is a system as elegant as it is robust, capable of handling both daily operation and large-scale events.
More than 30,000 visitors experienced L’Odyssée Sonore in its first two seasons, and the 2025 season, with new exciting content, continues to attract and amaze tourists. Beyond the visitor stats, Edeis, the operator of the venue, emphasizes the importance of the project as a technology flagbearer:
"The cultural applications of these new technologies promote the development of the immersive sector and vice versa: the public's ever-increasing expectations in cultural promotion and mediation stimulate scientific innovation. The Roman Theatre of Orange is today one of the most modern monuments in terms of technical equipment."
With its legendary acoustics, L’Odyssée Sonore reimagines the theatre as a living stage, powered by interactive soundscapes and state-of-the-art projection mapping. Cutting-edge AV meets timeless myth.
