Immersive Luz Cuenca fills historic church

Enter the fascinating world of digital creativity at San Miguel Church in Cuenca. “Luz Cuenca” is a largescale digital art installation produced by Ibercover Studio, which merges culture and technology to offer a unique experience to its visitors. In the immersive installation, Dataton WATCHOUT is teamed with 20 projectors to map content on the church’s walls, floors, vaulted ceilings, nooks and crannies.

The historic San Miguel Church in the heart of Cuenca recently re-opened having undergone extensive renovations financed by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha and the Cuenca Consortium. Although the re-opening itself is cause enough to celebrate, it also marks the beginning of “Luz Cuenca”, an exciting light and sound show. This unique cultural and tourist event uses animated image projections on the interior of the church to highlight the cultural richness of the city of Cuenca.

The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, was in charge of officially inaugurating “Luz Cuenca” in January 2024 and highlighted its importance for the city. Initially free, the exhibit will later charge a nominal entrance fee to ensure it is an affordable activity for all interested.

Ibercover Studio, the producer of the show, chose Fluge Audiovisuales to provide the audiovisual equipment including 20 Barco G60-W7 projectors running under 4 WATCHOUT multi-display systems, and Pixilab Blocks for control. The sound installation uses 20 KV2 Audio speakers, positioned around the space for maximum impact.

Fernando Carabias, Fluge Audiovisuales was in charge of the technical design of projection, adjustments, programming, scanning and 3D positioning with the collaboration and advice of Lluís Badosa and Miguel Ángel Yunta from INWO SMART AV. The content design of this impressive immersive experience is by Manuel Horischnik from Ibercover Studio.

After just over a month, the attraction has already become a cultural and tourist reference point in the city. “The Ibercover Studio and Fluge Audiovisuals teams have created an amazing transformation,” says Lluís Badosa at inWO, the Dataton premium partner for Spain. “Stepping into the church, now restored to its former glory, and into the world of “Luz Cuenca” is a truly fantastic experience!"
